Question 1

What can therapy help with?

Accepted Answer

Therapy can help with anxiety, stress, the effects of trauma, difficult emotions, relationship challenges, life transitions, low mood, and self-esteem. It's also a place to understand yourself better and build skills for whatever comes next. My primary focus areas are anxiety, coping skills, and trauma and PTSD.

Question 2

What should I expect when starting therapy?

Accepted Answer

Our early sessions focus on getting to know you: what brought you in, what you'd like to be different, and what matters most to you. From there, we'll set goals together based on your hopes and needs.

Question 3

Who do you work with?

Accepted Answer

I provide individual therapy for clients age 16 and older, in person at the Winston-Salem office or virtually.

Question 4

What types of therapy do you use?

Accepted Answer

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is at the heart of how I work with most concerns, and I use EMDR when we identify a need for a more specialized approach to trauma responses. I also draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, mindfulness-based therapy, and trauma-focused therapy, choosing approaches based on what fits each person.

Question 5

What is EMDR?

Accepted Answer

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, while recalling a distressing memory, with the goal of helping it feel less overwhelming. I'm trained in EMDR and may use it when appropriate.

Question 6

Do I need to know exactly what I want to work on before reaching out?

Accepted Answer

No. Many people start therapy simply knowing that something feels hard. Figuring out what you'd like to focus on can be part of the work.

Question 9

How do I request a consultation?

Question 10

Does Harden Counseling accept insurance?

Accepted Answer

I accept Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Aetna, including the Aetna State Health Plan. Coverage varies by plan, so please contact me to discuss your individual coverage.

Question 11

How much do sessions cost?

Accepted Answer

A 90-minute intake session is $185 and a 55-minute session is $165. If you use insurance, your cost depends on your plan. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice are subject to a $75 fee. If I'm not in network with your insurance, I can provide a superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement. And if cost is keeping you from getting the care you need, please reach out. I'm glad to talk through your situation and explore whether a reduced rate or sliding-scale option might work.

Question 12

How do existing clients access the Client Portal?

Accepted Answer

Existing clients can use the Client Portal link at the top of every page to reach my secure TherapyAppointment portal. New clients should use the contact form, phone, or email instead.
