EMDR Therapy in Winston-Salem, NC

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that can help distressing memories feel less intense. I'm trained in EMDR and may incorporate it into individual therapy when it fits a person's needs.

When EMDR might be considered

EMDR is most often used when past experiences continue to affect the present, such as:

  • Memories that still feel vivid or upsetting
  • Strong reactions that seem tied to the past
  • Lingering effects of a frightening event
  • Negative beliefs about yourself that feel stuck
  • Anxiety connected to specific experiences
  • Feeling unable to move past something

How EMDR works

In EMDR, you briefly bring a difficult memory to mind while following a form of bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements or alternating taps. This process is thought to help the brain reprocess the memory so it feels less charged.

EMDR follows a structured series of phases. Early sessions focus on understanding your history and building calming resources, so you feel prepared before any memory work begins.

My approach

EMDR is one tool among several, not a requirement. I consider it alongside other approaches and talk it through with you before we decide together whether it makes sense.

Like all of my work, EMDR is paced with care. Every person's response is different, and the process is adjusted to what feels manageable for you.

Related services

EMDR is most often part of trauma and PTSD therapy, and it may also support people whose anxiety is tied to specific experiences. Coping skills are built first to support the process.
